The Invisalign Process
Initial Consultation
During your initial appointment, your dentist will discuss with you about your cosmetic dentistry goals. Your dentist will inform you if Invisalign is a treatment option that you should consider. A small number of patients may not be suitable for this type of process. If you are a good candidate for Invisalign® clear braces, then your dentist will discuss treatment protocol and give you an estimated treatment timeline.
Digital Molding
Next, is the digital molding process. This step could happen during your initial appointment with your dentist, or a separate one, depending on scheduling. A digital scan, along with photographs and x-rays, will create a precise model of your mouth and teeth. These models are then sent to the Invisalign laboratory for the creation of your custom aligner trays.
Start Treatment
When your Invisalign trays are ready, you'll return to the office. Your dentist may fit small, clear attachments on your teeth to help the trays stay in place. These buttons are painless and temporary. Once your trays fit properly and you understand the aftercare program, you'll be ready to go. Your next follow-up appointment will be a few weeks later to check your tooth movements and tray fit. The entire process consists of a series of Invisalign trays. Unlike traditional metal braces, you won't need regular appointments with Invisalign. Instead, you'll return periodically to check your progress.
Reveal Your New Smile
After finishing your aligner sets and completing any refinements, you'll be ready to show off your stunning new Invisalign smile! We'll provide retainers to help maintain your results.

Treatment times vary depending on your specific case, but most patients complete their Invisalign treatment within 12-18 months. During your consultation, your Los Altos Invisalign doctor will provide you with an estimate of your treatment duration.
While Invisalign can treat many types of orthodontic issues, there are some limitations to this treatment. Invisalign may not be a good solution if you have large gaps or have a larger midline discrepancy. If you have unusually sized teeth, large rotations, severely tilted teeth, need to have teeth raised or lowered, have had previous dental work such as bridges or crowns, or you need to have extractions before your orthodontic treatment, you may not be considered a candidate for Invisalign. The best way to know for sure, however, is to setting up a free virtual consultation with our team.
Invisalign has come a long way in just a short period. Originally, they could only treat minor alignment problems. Today, however, they can treat a broader array of issues. Using Invisalign®, we can treat gapped teeth, overcrowding, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites.
After completing your Invisalign treatment, your Los Altos doctor will provide you with custom retainers to maintain your new smile. Initially, you'll wear your retainers full-time, gradually transitioning to nighttime wear. Consistent retainer use is essential to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position.
