Nitrous Oxide
Commonly known as "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is the most commonly used type of dental sedation. It acts quickly and wears off fast, allowing you to drive home after your appointment. Nitrous oxide can be easily controlled with minimal negative effects, making it a very safe and effective way to manage anxiety.
Oral Conscious Sedation
This type of sedation is typically administered in the form of a pill or liquid. Medications like Halcion or Valium provide mild to moderate relaxation. You may feel drowsy or groggy, but you will remain alert enough to respond to questions and understand what is happening around you.
IV Sedation and General Anesthesia
Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation induces a state of minimal consciousness, often resulting in little to no memory of the procedure. General anesthesia causes complete unconsciousness and usually requires supervision by an anesthesiologist. Both types require you to arrange transportation home with a friend or family member after your appointment.
The Sedation Process
Pre-Procedure Preparation
Before your appointment, we provide thorough instructions on how to prepare. This involves specific details about dietary restrictions and what to expect during the procedure, ensuring that you are completely ready.
Aftercare
After the procedure, you will receive post-care instructions. Depending on the sedation type, you might need help getting home. We will follow up to ensure your proper healing and answer any additional questions you may have.
Administration of Sedation
On the day of your procedure, we conscientiously apply the chosen sedation method and take all necessary steps to ensure your comfort during the entire process. Our skilled team closely watches over you, offering attentive care and support to ensure your health and safety.
Initial Consultation
We start by arranging an initial meeting to go over your anxiety levels and medical history in depth. This detailed conversation helps us fully grasp your needs and preferences, so we can thoughtfully choose the best sedation option for you.

IV sedation will create a calm mental state without causing you to become unconscious. You will remain aware and able to follow the doctor's directions while sedated. Many patients do not remember the sedation period, so you probably won't recall much or any of the procedure. The medications we give will produce a very pleasant feeling of euphoria. You will be conscious, at ease, and able to cooperate during the procedure – but you will not remember it!
Certainly, sedation dentistry is safe when administered by experienced professionals. We closely monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and adjust sedation levels as needed.
Sedation uses medication to promote relaxation during dental procedures. The level of sedation can vary from minimal, where you are alert but relaxed, to deep sedation, where you are barely conscious but can still be awakened.
Sedation dentistry is perfect for individuals with moderate to severe dental fear, a pronounced gag reflex, the need for extensive dental procedures, or trouble sitting still for extended periods. Nevertheless, each person is different, and we will evaluate your eligibility during your first consultation with our team!
